How to Stop Your Dog From Pulling on the Leash

If your daily walk feels like waterskiing, you're not alone. Leash pulling is the #1 complaint we hear, and it's very fixable.

Why dogs pull

Dogs pull because it works — every time pulling moves them forward, you've rewarded it. The fix is to flip that equation so a loose leash is what makes progress.

The "be a tree" method

  • Start somewhere boring — your living room or backyard.
  • The moment the leash goes tight, stop. Become a tree.
  • Wait for slack, say "yes," and step forward.
  • Repeat until loose-leash walking becomes the default.

Keep sessions short, especially in the Houston heat, and your dog will improve within a couple of weeks.
